Another year, another Teacher<\/a> Appreciation Week to celebrate those who’ve led us, taught us, and acted as our mentors<\/a>. Many of us know that teachers can be strict in real life, sometimes for the better. However, when things get too rough with the rea<\/span>l-life instructors, luckily, certain\u00a0fictional\u00a0characters set the bar high for our educational dreams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are ten of our favorite TV and movie teachers you might have wished had strolled into your classroom when school got too hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

TV & Movie Teachers We Love<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Miss Grotke from Recess<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

While Principal Prickly and Miss Finster were always trying to ruin the fun at Third Street Elementary School, Miss Grotke made sure the kids’ minds were open and their chakras aligned. Not to mention, she was the Black feminist professor of a young person’s dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smh. T.J., Gretchen and the rest of the Recess<\/em> crew didn’t know what they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ms. Honey from Matilda <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

It can be quite the traumatic experience when you start your school day being flung across the courtyard by your pigtails. This was Ms. Trunchbull’s TERRIBLE everyday behavior in the 1996 flick Matilda.<\/em> Thus, when the sweet Ms. Honey was introduced as Matilda’s teacher, it seemed like the heavens had answered the prayers of hammer-throwing kids everywhere. Along with being super nice, Ms. Honey loved to teach, which is all one could ask for in this cold, cruel world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hightower from The Steve Harvey Show<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

While a nice teacher can be great, sometimes you need that mentor who strikes the perfect balance of cool, stern and educational. Mr. Hightower played that role for students like Bullethead and Romeo in the 90s sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show.\u00a0<\/em>Add in a sense of humor and Mr. Hightower became that teacher you’d visit in between your not-so-fun classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Blu Rain from Precious <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let’s keep it a thousand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precious’ life was A MESS. The Harlem teen was facing an abusive mother, kids by her abusive father and she was bullied for her size. Her only haven throughout the movie was a teacher named Blu Rain (played by Paula Patton<\/strong>) at an alternative school. Rain helped Precious (played by Gabourey Sidibe<\/strong>) discover her creative side and she even provided safety and housing during an intense moment in the film. This, plus a name that literally sounds like peace, makes Blu Rain an MVP teacher everyone could use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dewey Finn from School of Rock <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

The easiest way to make school exciting is to actually go out and do what you’re being taught. Well, Jack Black<\/strong>‘s character from 2003’s School of Rock<\/em> took this concept to a new level when he decided to start a band with his music class. In the process, the kids competed in a major competition, learned about their talents and gained some much-needed self-esteem. Granted, Dewey Finn had to sneak them around in the process, but everything turned out okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Janine Teagues from Abbott Elementary <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Ms. Teagues may get on the other “Abbott Elementary” teachers’ nerves, but her passion to educate her students is beyond belief. She left her somewhat higher-paying job at the District to return to her first love in the classroom. Ms. Teagues’ second graders love her and her strong “mission to help the lives of her students.” Janine is portrayed by the series’ creator Quinta Brunson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Mark Cooper from Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Former NBA player Mark Cooper becomes a dedicated teacher and basketball coach in Oakland after his playing career ends. When he’s not dealing with his students and players, Mark spends time with his gorgeous female roommate — who he eventually starts dating — and other friends. Despite not having planned to become a teacher and coach, he rose to the occasion. Mr. Cooper is portrayed by actor and comedian Mark Curry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ms. Valerie Frizzle from The Magic School Bus<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Scholastic’s “The Magic School Bus” follows Ms. Valerie Frizzle and her class as they set off on field trips. Based on the best-selling book series of the same name, “The Magic School Bus” takes kids on a virtual bus ride. Magically transforming into a plane, submarine, spaceship or surfboard, this bus carries Ms. Frizzle and her students on super adventures and teaches them about science. Ms. Frizzle is an eccentric and fun teacher that any student would love to have. We’re sure her adventures made the school day fly by. Ms. Frizzle was voiced by Lily Tomlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dumbledore from Harry Potter<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The ultimate mentor, who trusted his students enough to let them figure things out on their own — even when it was painful to watch. Dumbledore was a great Professor, offering his students wisdom to know and space to grow on their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Erin Gruwell from Freedom Writers<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Based on a true story, she gave her students journals and essentially saved their lives through writing. She funded classroom supplies out of her own pocket and worked multiple jobs to stay in that room, refusing to abandon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Coach Walter Oakes from A Different World <\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Coach Walter Oakes was the kind of campus presence that made Hillman College feel like a real community rather than just a collection of classrooms and dormitories. As the resident director of Gilbert Hall and the school’s athletic coach, Coach Oakes occupied that rare and necessary space between authority figure and the cool uncle every college student secretly needed in their corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
